Gut River – A Journey into No-Man’s Land

Gut River – A Journey into No-Man’s Land

FOR A BREAKDOWN OF OUR JOURNEY TO GUTS RIVER PLEASE CONTINUE READING THE BLOG POST BELOW! NUFF MORE IMAGES INCLUDED!    The "Negril Weekend" was over and we were on our way back to Kingston, but of course we had to make time for one more adventure! Enter; Gut River - a river and hamlet that leads out to a beach along the southern coastline of Manchester, Jamaica.   At the start of my day, I had no idea I would be stopping in Manchester, but after leaving Negril earlier than planned I had to make something happen. With a two hour drive from Negril complete and a little help from Google Maps I found myself in Alligator Pond, a small fishing village in Manchester. I had been to Little Ochi Seafood Restaurant before, which is a popular restaurant and bar in Alligator Pond, but I literally had no idea it was so close to Gut River.   The drive out to the river was about 20 minutes...

Negril Weekend – Views from the Other Side

Negril Weekend – Views from the Other Side

FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE PLACES YOU'VE SEEN IN #DOWNDIROAD EPISODE 4, PLEASE CONTINUE READING THE BLOG POST BELOW. ADDITIONAL PICTURES & NEGRIL STORY INCLUDED.   If my memory serves me correctly, I've only ever stayed in Negril once in my life...and that was probably in 2001. I was an eighth grader; my class went on a trip where we stayed over at a small hotel owned by one of my classmate's parents. I lost my favourite green shirt on Seven Mile Beach. I was so mad! Fast forward to 2017. I'm no longer a preteen, but I'm still pretty unfamiliar with the area. That changed this past weekend when the crew and I spent two days and one night in Negril, one of Jamaica's most popular tourist cities. Being employed in the hospitality industry gives me a keen interest in cities like Negril. It's an interesting contrast between the business hotels in Kingston and the all-inclusives on the North & South coasts....

Man On The Moon – A Day at the Moon Palace Jamaica Grande Resort

Man On The Moon – A Day at the Moon Palace Jamaica Grande Resort

Please be advised that I'm currently on vacation & I want to do vacation things.   So here's the deal... At the beginning of my three week vacation this year, it was my intention to go on an island-wide tour. I'd make my way around the island from one coast to the next. The idea was brilliant but, my body has not been willing AT ALL . Sleep is my best friend and we hang out everyday so I've had to revise that plan juuust a little bit! Naturally, I still have to make some exceptions so that I can travel & go on a few excursions and it just so happened that my aunt & cousins were on the island & they invited my mother & I to come visit them at their hotel in Ocho Rios. Now, it is often said that "Jamaicans love freeness!" but, I've never been one to subscribe to this way of thinking.  Nonetheless, there was absolutely no...

Klouds & Kalooki – A Weekend In Holywell

Klouds & Kalooki – A Weekend In Holywell

"Located over 900 metres (3,000 feet) above sea-level in the cool, tropical mist forests of the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, Holywell (pronounced Hollywell) is the perfect escape from the heat and stress of city life. Just an hour's drive from New Kingston, it is the largest recreation area within the National Park, and the closest to the capital." A fitting description of the Holywell Recreational Park on the JCDT website. When you think about Jamaica, sometimes the first thing that comes to mind is sun, sea and sand, but I think we forget that our Arawak ancestors first described our tropical paradise as the "land of wood & water." I've found Holywell to be a place I make a priority to visit every few months. It's not even just for the scenery, but I think I've developed a connection with its environment and mystique. My friends & I all work in the business district of New Kingston, Jamaica. Personally...

Chasing Monkey Island – Part 2 – Rafting on The Blue Lagoon

Chasing Monkey Island – Part 2 – Rafting on The Blue Lagoon

"Could you be so kind, then show me a sign; I've been searching and it's so hard to find." - wise words by Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley ==> Check Out #DownDiRoad - Episode 1 - Drone Fun on the Blue Lagoon & St. Margaret's Bay  I'm not sure where this fascination with Monkey Island came from but, one more adventure has ended & I still have not set foot on that piece of land. This week's adventure was actually pretty organized. Jodi wanted to go rafting for her birthday, so I gave her some choices & the Blue Lagoon was the one she picked. I figured I could humanely kill two birds with one stone by stopping off at Monkey Island during our raft tour since it's so close, but why did I think it would that easy? Silly me right? Big Miss Steak!   Portland, Jamaica is filled with beautiful beaches and anybody who knows me personally knows it is one of my favourite parishes. I've been to...

Chasing Monkey Island – Part 1 – San San Beach

Chasing Monkey Island – Part 1 – San San Beach

Monkey Island eludes me.   I didn't start frequenting Portland until maybe two years ago but the more I go and the more I familiarize myself with this parish, is the more I fall in love. Portland is located on the northeast coast of Jamaica, and for me it has the best beaches on the island. Last Friday night I went to two bars with some friends for a drink & I had such a bad experience that I had to calm my nerves with some fried chicken from Popeyes. I personally think the best ideas begin with chicken, because by the time we left at 10:30PM, a question was posed and subsequently with the answer a decision was made.   Q: CAN WE GO TO THE COUNTRY TOMORROW? A: YES WE ARE GOING TO PORTLAND IN THE MORNING!   Fast forward to the next day and our plan is set. This week's adventure would be a trip to San San Beach, get a boat ride over to...

Kingston Dub Club – “It Just Happened”

Kingston Dub Club – “It Just Happened”

These days I've been spending a lot of time making excuses for why I didn't invite people to places LOL. It's hard work & it always leads back to the same point. "I didn't plan it, it just happened." It's the truth! Imagine I am at work on God's good Sunday afternoon & my friends just randomly decide to have a par. It just happened. Imagine we are at said par & another friend shows up towards the end & asks "Yow can we go to Dub Club?!" Of course I'm gonna say yes. It just happened.   Kingston Dub Club is a weekly Reggae session that is held at Skyline Dr. in Jacks Hill, St. Andrew. Kingston Dub Club has one of the most amazing views overlooking the city of Kingston. It features "100% Undiluted Roots/Rockers/Reggae & Dub music from the highest regions," but the event is so much more than that. With a strong Rastafarian background, the event I think is all about the sharing...

Welcome To DownDiRoad.com

My name is Duane "Doofy" Phillips and I’m a Tourism & Hospitality professional from Kingston, Jamaica. I studied Hotel & Resort Management in University and currently I'm employed at one of the top hotels in Kingston. Over recent years it has been a hobby of mine to go exploring through Jamaica. Whether it's going to a river in the country, or going to a new restaurant, I find that when it comes to tourism I always want to be in the know. There are so many hidden gems in Jamaica and the fact that I’m in this business, I make it my point of duty to familiarize myself with many of these attractions. Up until this point I have always catalogued my adventures via my Social Media pages, but friends and onlookers have always suggested that I document these adventures in a more formal manner. It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to my new blog downdiroad.com! With this blog I...

@FatalicSounds Road Trip Summer ’17!

@FatalicSounds Road Trip Summer ’17!

If I had to summarize Fatalic's Road Trip Summer '17 CD I'd narrow it down to two words; FEEL GOOD! As a former DJ & music aficionado my friends don't only hit me up when they want to find out where to take cool IG pics, but they hit me up for new music like ALL THE TIME. I can admit I don't listen to mixtapes much these days, but I always get excited when Fatalic drops new projects because their work is quality. Road Trip Summer 2017 is no different. It's the perfect mix of several genres, smooth flowing, and as usual it's super creative. I've known the guys over at Fatalic Sounds for probably the better part of 10 years. I know their talent and I know their potential, but building a brand is hard work. When they approached me to help them execute in the promotion of their brand and their new CD there was no way I could say no....
