F&B Downtown – Fine Jewellery Meets Fine Dining

F&B Downtown – Fine Jewellery Meets Fine Dining

Have you heard about the Downtown Kingston revival? There is a LOT happening Downtown. It might have started with Digicel building their headquarters there, but with the recent redevelopment project headed by the Urban Development Company (UDC), there is construction being done all over.  Look around and you'll see new buildings rising up everywhere. From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, & the GraceKennedy Limited corporate office, to right on the waterfront where you'll see the new Victoria Pier Food complex redevelopment project. Downtown Kingston is well on it's way to becoming a hotspot again.  A few weeks ago I heard about this fancy restaurant Downtown.  "Downtown? Fancy?" I was confused, but I decided that I needed to see this for myself, and so began my F&B Downtown experience.   On the corner of Harbour Street & Church Street, you will find the Swiss Store's 'F&B Downtown' restaurant, which might be one of the most pleasant surprises one can find in Downtown Kingston. Parking is...

Life Yard – The Heart of Fleet Street

Life Yard – The Heart of Fleet Street

You can view the newest episode of #DownDiRoad right below, but I implore you to stay and read the article as well as view the photo gallery! Fleet Street, Parade Gardens, Kingston Jamaica. If someone mentioned the community of Parade Gardens a few years ago, if you even knew of it you’d probably just associate it with that one word…. “ghetto.” I mean, based on the socio-economical conditions that determine a community falling in that category, Parade Gardens fits the description, but what you need to realize is that this community is a ghetto paradise. There are a group of young men who grew up in the community, and they decided that they were going to take their lives into their own hands. They wouldn’t let the crime & violence define them or the community and they would breathe life into the community, so that's what they did and Life Yard was born.   Life Yard as defined by it’s members is a social enterprise, the...

Crêpes with Trace – Tea Tree Crêperie

Crêpes with Trace – Tea Tree Crêperie

So boom, Tea Tree Crêperie & Treehouse Bar! Tea Tree I have to say is a very nice spot off Lady Musgrave Road in Kingston. As the name suggests, Tea Tree specializes in crêpes. They describe themselves just like this; "Tea Tree Crêperie & Treehouse Pub is a Cordon Bleu style Hot Spot and the first of its kind in Jamaica. Though we specialize in amazing sweet & savoury crêpes, we offer an incredibly varied menu that includes classic breakfasts, gluten-free as well as vegan delights, tantalizing desserts, quiche, salads, Blue Mountain coffee drinks, blended and specialty drinks, top shelf offerings and many more hearty goodies by Chef Maree and the team." For those of you who don't know what a crêpe is, it's a very thin pastry item, usually made from wheat flour or buckwheat flour. Think of it as a super thin pancake that you can wrap or stuff with either sweet or savory fillings & toppings. I went to Tea Tree with...

Devon House – It’s Not Just I-Scream

Devon House – It’s Not Just I-Scream

Devon House, Kingston Jamaica.   When you hear the words Devon House the first thing that comes to mind is ice cream. I mean that's what Devon House is world famous for right? Before it even made it to all the "Top-Ten ice creams in the world" lists, Devon House had been serving both locals & tourists their world famous 'i-scream' for over twenty five years, but take a deeper look at this National Heritage site & a broader picture starts to form. In my earliest memories of Devon House, I remember going for ice cream on Sunday evenings with my family, and in my later years hanging out on the lawns with friends after school. It was almost like the community park where everybody came together with one common denominator [ICE CREAM], and even up to this day on Sunday evenings you still see people walking into the place in droves! I didn't realize Devon House was more than ice-cream until maybe two...

MEET STREET! – A NIGHT AT THE JA FOOD & DRINK FESTIVAL

MEET STREET! – A NIGHT AT THE JA FOOD & DRINK FESTIVAL

Greetings & salutations jenkle people!! Food Food Food! The third staging of the week long Jamaica Food & Drink festival has come to a close and based on the reviews on social media, it looks like it was a hit! The festival consisted of 7 events, but the team and I only made it out to Meet Street which we have done every year since the inception of the festival. Personally, it's a joy to see the growth of local brands as the years progress, and it's great that the organizers have created a festival like this with different themed events catering to people from all walks of life. This year's staging of Meet Street was held at the Waterfront in Downtown, Kingston and let me tell you I think this was the best one yet. So here's the rundown. When it started, Meet Street event was originally billed as one which highlighted food trucks, but this year the theme was "Meet Street...

Big up and thanks for stopping by!   So here's the deal. I'm about to go on a journey. A gastronomical journey. In the next few weeks downdiroad will be featuring a few eateries and sharing our findings with the masses. Without saying too much, Devon House will be one of the featured stops and I did a bit of scouting earlier this week on the property. I made a stop at one of the establishments on the property, so here's a little mini review of my Mahogany Tree Bar experience.     So Mahogany Tree Bar; this was my second time coming here. The first encounter wasn't so pleasant and let's just say I ended up leaving before I even ordered anything. I believe in second chances though, so I decided I'd give them a chance because it's so close to...

Boat Life – A Quick Ochi Weekend

FOR A BREAKDOWN OF MY LATEST ADVENTURE PLEASE CONTINUE READING THE BLOG POST BELOW! NUFF MORE IMAGES INCLUDED!    I work really hard. I rarely broadcast my professional accomplishments because I believe in actions speaking louder than words. Not because you aren't seeing something means it isn't happening. Always remember that.   A bit of context before the adventure. I've never been at the top of my class or a model student, but I realized from early that I was not going to spend 4 &1/2 years in University to graduate and work in a call center. I would much rather continue doing what I studied in school, so after a few rough patches and bouts of unemployment and depression, I'm finally at a good enough place in life, working at a popular hotel in Kingston, Jamaica. I work 6 days per week, 8-10 hours per day and I started at my current place of employment close to the end of 2014. By the time...
